The Necessity of Spiritual Rebirth

Jesus speaks of a rebirth that is absolutely necessary:

(John 3: 3) Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”

A short time later, Jesus clarified that the rebirth he was talking about wasn’t physical in nature, but spiritual. This spiritual rebirth is something the Holy Spirit brings about for all who trust in him [Jesus].

The apostle John speaks of spiritual rebirth:

(John 1: 12, 13) Yet to all who did receive him [Jesus], to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

No one is a child of God by natural descent—we aren’t born children of God, we must be reborn into his family. Those who receive Jesus, those who place their trust in him, are born of God.

The apostle Peter, writing to those who have placed their trust in Jesus writes:

(1 Peter 1: 23) For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable…

Our bodies will one day perish, but our reborn spirits are imperishable.

The apostle Paul, using different language, writes of the new birth:

(2 Corinthians 5: 17) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: The old has gone, the new has come!

Those who put their faith in Jesus have become something they were not before. They are a new creation; they have been reborn.

John, again, writes:

(1 John 3: 1) See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that weshould be called children of God! And that is what we are!

Those who are reborn are reborn into God’s family; they have become children of God.

Just as our physical nature has physical needs that must be met if we are to grow and remain physically healthy, so our reborn spiritual nature has spiritual needs that must be met if we are to grow and remain spiritually healthy. It is these spiritual needs that the resources presented on this site are intended to meet.
